Deposit Protection Fund of Uganda (DPF) holds engagement with Nation Media Group (NMG) Uganda – June 23,2023

The Deposit Protection Fund of Uganda (DPF) management team hosted the management team of Nation Media Group (NMG) Uganda to an engagement aimed at fostering the working relationship between the two organizations. The Fund’s management team was led by the Chief Executive Officer Mrs. Julia Clare Olima Oyet along with Mr. Patrick O. Ezaga (Director Communications) and Mr. Yusuf Mukiibi (Director Finance & Operations) while the Nation Media Group Uganda team was led by the Managing Director Mr. Tony Glencross who was accompanied by Mr. Sam Barata (General Manager Commercial), Mr. Julian Mwine – Head of News NMG Uganda, Ms. Cathy Ageno (Broadcast Editor – KFM and Dembe FM) and Ms. Mercy Nalugo (Regional Editor).

Mrs. Julia Oyet; DPF Chief Executive Officer, welcomed Mr. Glencross and the NMG management team to the engagement. She began her remarks by appreciating the professional coverage and publicity accorded to the Fund by Nation Media Group. Mrs. Oyet shared with the NMG team about the background of DPF, noting that its primary mandate is to pay depositors of financial institutions regulated by Bank of Uganda up to Uganda shillings 10million in the event that those institutions failed or were closed.  She highlighted that the deposit insurance limit covers 98% of the banked population and that the Fund plays a critical role in the stability of the financial sector.  She updated the NMG team about some of the Fund’s projects such as the Depositor Payout and Premium Management System, the Single Customer View Project, development of a DPF stand-alone law and automation of its systems among others.

DPF Director Communications Mr. Patrick O. Ezaga informed the team that enhancement of public awareness about the Fund is a top priority in the Fund’s five year strategic plan. This, he said, was one of the key reasons for the engagement with NMG aimed at identifying areas of collaboration that will drive the Fund’s public awareness agenda.  Mr. Ezaga informed the NMG team that the Fund has planned to undertake more engagements with the media over the next years in a bid to continuously share information with them so that they report accurately since any misinformation could potentially have dire consequences with regard to public confidence in the financial sector. He appreciated NMG for its prompt response and good reporting whenever called upon to cover the Funds’ events.

The Nation Media Group (NMG) Uganda Managing Director, Mr. Tony Glencross appreciated the DPF team for hosting them and informed them of the various platforms owned by the conglomerate in Uganda. These are the Daily Monitor, NTV Uganda, KFM, and Dembe FM among others. Mr. Glencross invited the DPF team to use these various platforms for reaching out to the different stakeholders. He concluded his remarks by reiterating that NMG remained committed to supporting the Fund in its public awareness efforts.
