Deposit Protection Fund of Uganda (DPF) holds strategic engagement with Uganda Communications Commission (UCC)
The Management team of Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) led by the Ag. Executive Director/ Director Engineering & Communications Infrastructure Eng. Irene Kaggwa Sewankambo was hosted to a strategic networking engagement on November 15, 2023, by the Deposit Protection Fund Management team led by the Chief Executive Officer Dr. Julia Clare Olima Oyet.
Eng. Sewankambo was accompanied by Ms. Alice Nyangoma (UCC Director Internal Audit), Dr. Abudu-Sallam Waiswa (Head Legal), Ms. Rebecca Mukita (Head Public & International Relations), Mr. James Beronda (Head Technical Services – Universal Services & Access Fund) and Mr. Joseph Kizito (Head Consumer Protection). Dr. Julia Oyet was accompanied by Ms. Angela Kiryabwire Kanyima (Director Legal & Board Secretariate), Mr. Balaam Ssempala (Director Information Technology), Dr. Michael Mayanja Lugemwa (Director Internal Audit), Mr. Patrick O. Ezaga (Director Communications) and Mr. Yusuf Mukiibi (Director Finance & Operations).
The DPF CEO Dr. Julia Oyet appreciated Eng. Sewankambo and the rest of the UCC team for honouring the invitation Dr, Julia Oyet gave a brief background of the Fund’s mandate and operations and further informed the UCC team that deposit insurance targets the less sophisticated depositors and the current limit is UGX 10million and it covers 98% of the depositors of Contributing Institutions. Furthermore, she emphasized the need for depositors to update their personal information with their respective Contributing Institutions because it is that information which the Fund will use to pay them in case their Contributing Institution fails/is closed by Bank of Uganda.
UCC Ag. Executive Director Eng. Sewankambo expressed her appreciation to DPF for hosting the UCC Management team to the networking engagement and that it was a start to a good working relationship between the two entities. She informed the DPF team that the Commission is making 25 years of regulation and shared updates in the communication industry. She highlighted the areas of the Commission’s mandate which is hinged on overseeing postage, courier services, telecommunication, broadcasting, spectrum management and data communication. Eng. Sewankambo emphasized that for the economy to develop further, there is need for more collaboration between the government bodies and partnerships.
In her closing remarks, Dr. Julia Oyet appreciated the UCC Management team for the information shared that will enable the Fund benchmark to further improve its operations and highlighted that the Fund is open to more future engagements and collaborations with the Commission.
