Deposit Protection Fund of Uganda (DPF) holds strategic engagement with Financial Intelligence Authority (FIA) – February 15, 2024

In a bid to build and enhance its relations with the financial sector safety-net players, the Fund’s management team led by the Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Julia Clare Olima Oyet hosted the management team of the Financial Intelligence Authority (FIA) to a strategic engagement on February 15, 2024.

Dr. Julia Clare Olima Oyet (Mrs.) expressed appreciation to FIA’s Executive Director Mr. Samuel Wandera and his team for honoring the invitation. She noted that the engagement was premised on the fact that both DPF and FIA are key actors in the Financial Sector Stability Forum (FSSF) and hence the need for the two entities to enhance their strategic collaboration. Dr. Julia Oyet was accompanied by Mr. Alan N. Lwetabe (Director Investments), Dr. Michael Mayanja Lugemwa (Director Internal Audit), Mr. Patrick O. Ezaga (Director Communications), Mr. Nicholas Odwoka (Assistant Manager Business Process Automation), Ms. Grace Kalenda (Assistant Manager Human Capital) and Ms. Jacinta Anyinge (Assistant Manager Legal).

Other members of the FIA team were Mr. Emmanuel Okurut (Director Finance & Administration), Mr. Lazarus Mukasa (Director Analysis & Monitoring), Mr. David Ngobi (Ag. Director Compliance & Training), Ms. Angom Apita Dorcus (Director Legal, Corporate Affairs & International Relations), Mr. Cyrus Barigye (Director ICT Systems and Security), Mr. Samuel Livingstone Waako (Manager Internal Audit), Ms. Esther Aikiriza Kagira (Manager Strategic Analysis and Statistics) and Mr. James Ssaka (Senior Personal Assistant to the Executive Director).

Dr. Julia Oyet shared with the FIA management team the history of the Fund indicating that it started off as an account in Bank of Uganda before becoming a stand-alone institution. She further briefed the team about the Fund’s operations, fund size, protected limit, human capital structure and technological developments such as the Deposit Premium & Payout Management System. She also informed the FIA management team that as players in the financial sector, there was a need to explore more areas of collaboration between the two entities, especially in the area of creating public awareness about their operations and reaching out to more stakeholders.

Speaking on behalf of the FIA management team, the Executive Director Mr. Samuel Wandera appreciated the DPF team for hosting them to the networking engagement. Mr. Wandera highlighted the mandate of the Authority which focuses on combating money laundering, countering terrorism financing and countering proliferation. He also informed the team that the Authority ensures compliance of accountable persons e.g. financial institutions, businesses and individuals that deal with money, by ensuring that their operations are in line with the Authority’s mandate. He welcomed the idea of building synergies between the institutions and committed to taking up this noble task with his team.
